Bright Spots: Black Culture
The Post and Courier's Education Lab is founded on the principle that all children in South Carolina deserve equal access to quality public education. Two schools in Charleston are making that a reality through arts-infused education.
Watoto Academy of Performing Arts is a youth arts program at Meeting Street Brentwood and Meeting Street Academy, both are elementary schools in Charleston, South Carolina. At the heart of Watoto is a celebration of Black culture and history, from drumming and dancing to the West African-inspired costumes. That representation is key. Watoto's emphasis on highlighting African American culture stands out.
